Research

The Lalit Kala Akademi, as the National Academy of Art and the apex institution entrusted with the promotion and preservation of visual arts in India, is committed to advancing research, documentation, and dissemination of artistic knowledge and heritage. The Akademi serves the nation by promoting creative artistic practices and organizing exhibitions, educational programmes, seminars, and scholarly engagements of national significance throughout the year.

Under its Memorandum of Association (MoA), the Akademi has been entrusted with the responsibility of encouraging study, research, documentation, and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of visual and creative arts, including painting, sculpture, graphics, contemporary, folk, tribal, and traditional arts, art history, art criticism, and related disciplines.

Research Objectives

The research objectives of the Akademi include:

1. Encouraging and promoting study and research in the fields of creative arts such as painting, sculpture, graphics, and allied visual arts.
2. Facilitating the exchange of ideas among various schools of art through conferences, seminars, exhibitions, workshops, and other academic programmes on an all-India basis, involving scholars, educationists, State Academies, Zonal Cultural Centres, universities, art colleges and schools, museums, galleries, and art associations.
3. Promoting the study, research, documentation, and survey of folk, tribal, and traditional arts and crafts techniques; preserving and projecting these art forms; organizing regional surveys; and encouraging surviving indigenous craftsmen, painters, sculptors, and traditional practitioners.

As part of its ongoing commitment to research and knowledge dissemination, the Akademi and its Regional Centres regularly organizes lectures, seminars, workshops, and discussions on diverse aspects of visual artforms. These initiatives benefit researchers, scholars, students, practicing artists, and art enthusiasts across the country.

The Akademi also conducts the Lalit Kala Lecture Series, featuring distinguished artists, scholars, and eminent personalities from the field of art and culture. The lecture series provides a vibrant platform for intellectual engagement and meaningful dialogue on contemporary, folk, tribal, and traditional visual arts practices. Attended by artists, students, researchers, scholars, and art enthusiasts, these lectures provide valuable insights into artistic processes, creative practices, and critical discourses in visual arts.

The Lalit Kala Lecture Series has featured several eminent artists and distinguished personalities from the field of visual arts, including Siddharth, Arpana Caur, K. S. Radhakrishnan, Ananda Moy Banerji,  and  Jagannath Panda, who have shared their artistic experiences, perspectives, and contributions to the field of visual arts through insightful lectures and interactive sessions with students, scholars, artists, and art enthusiasts.
